Evaluation of manure management and treatment technology for environmental protection and sustainable livestock farming in Europe.

MANEV is an European project of large-scale demonstration framed within the LIFE + Programme of Environment Policy and Governance, whose main objective is to improve environmental protection and sustainability of livestock promoting the use of treatment technologies in different saturated or surplus areas in the production of livestock manure across Europe.

8 partners will assess 13 treatment technologies and manure management systems, located in 8 regions with high pig production belonging to 4 European countries, following a common monitoring and assessment protocol that will be developed a long the project. The results of each assessment could be referred to CO2 equivalent units in order to assess its contribution to fight against climate change.

A software tool will be developed based on the results and all the information and data obtained from the technology assessments developed in the project, which is intended to provide an objective decision support tool to determine the most appropriate treatment according to the local circumstances, without being these mere technological comparison but taking into account aspects like for example environment, society, economics, local regulation,… of every study case. Europe will be endowed with a common decision support tool to the various technologies beneficial for both farming sector (search for the optimal technology) and the administration (environmental control and promotion of the use of technologies).

Action: ITACyL Scenario

Monitoring and evaluation of processes based on solid-liquid separation and biological nitrification-denitrification of the liquid fraction (Castilla y León, Spain)..

ITACyL will assess a treatment plant set up by the company RECUDENS SL located on the farm called La Corredera II. It will consist of a solid-liquid separation stage (with addition of coagulants and flocculants) and a treatment of the liquid fraction by nitrification-denitrification.

The effluent that is obtained will be used for fertirrigation and the solid fraction will be used for crop land application.

The main objective of this action is to evaluate both the influence of storage time on the yields of solid-liquid separation and optimization of the type and dose of flocculant and coagulant used to reduce costs and obtain a solids content suitable for later stages.

Regarding this last fact, with this pre-treatment the aeration required for the subsequent step (treatment of the liquid fraction) will be also reduced and optimized due to solids removal.

Based on these criteria, with this pre-treatment the aeration required in the subsequent step (biological treatment process of the liquid fraction) will be reduced and optimized by the removal of solids.
