LIFE + MANEV PROJECT

Evaluation of manure management and treatment technology for environmental protection and sustainable livestock farming in Europe.

MANEV is an European project of large-scale demonstration framed within the LIFE + Programme of Environment Policy and Governance, whose main objective is to improve environmental protection and sustainability of livestock promoting the use of treatment technologies in different saturated or surplus areas in the production of livestock manure across Europe.

8 partners will assess 13 treatment technologies and manure management systems, located in 8 regions with high pig production belonging to 4 European countries, following a common monitoring and assessment protocol that will be developed a long the project. The results of each assessment could be referred to CO2 equivalent units in order to assess its contribution to fight against climate change.

A software tool will be developed based on the results and all the information and data obtained from the technology assessments developed in the project, which is intended to provide an objective decision support tool to determine the most appropriate treatment according to the local circumstances, without being these mere technological comparison but taking into account aspects like for example environment, society, economics, local regulation,… of every study case. Europe will be endowed with a common decision support tool to the various technologies beneficial for both farming sector (search for the optimal technology) and the administration (environmental control and promotion of the use of technologies).

COMMON EVALUATION PROTOCOL

During the first year of the project a common protocol for the monitoring and evaluation of the treatment systems and management schemes will be defined.

It will be carried out following a methodology of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), which will be integrated into the software tool, to determine differences in the environmental impact generated between the current manure management and possible management alternatives.

In order to compare results in every scenario, a functional unit will be established (i.e. m3 of slurry, kg of pig, etc.).

The protocol will be defined through the following steps:

  1. Identification and standardization of evaluation criteria establishing a common basis for the protocol.
  2. Identification and standardization of indicators which will be used to assess all criteria previously agreed.
  3. Definition of physical and chemical parameters to be monitored, sampling methodologies and sampling points in each of the strategies and treatments, with the objective of obtaining consistent and comparable results.

Environmental monitoring will be conducted in each of the scenario in order to check and evaluate the direct consequences of the implementation of new management systems with regard to emissions of gases, water quality, soil quality and other common indicators.

The life cycle analysis will provide quantifiable and comparable results. Hereafter a sensitivity analysis will be applied in order to reduce uncertainty of the results.
